Sunday at Bonnaroo

This picture of Sunday at Bonnaroo by Tinah UtsmanSunday at Bonnaroo is Nate Barrett's last installment of his Bonnaroompah adventures. Will the Bonnaroompah band go hog wild after their last show, since they're finally free of responsibility? Read on to get all the torrid details!
On Sunday morning, we woke to find that we had indeed survived Saturday night. Over breakfast, many of us swapped tales of what we saw or did the night before. During the afternoon, I did manage to see a little of Cristabel & the Jons set on the Blue Room Café stage. I also caught the Yard Dogs again, and soon enough it was getting on to the time for our last polka set. Then it would be on to the Solar Stage to perform in the Mini-Band of Humans.
The set up for the Solar Stage show, the moving of equipment and such, took up most of the early afternoon. So before I knew it, it was show time. One more Bonnaroompah show, a parade over to Solar Stage, do an obscure rock show, get the gear back to the camp, and our work at Bonnaroo would be done.
We all dreamed of how we would finally cut loose and really open up the party throttle after our last show commitments were done. As we got our gear on, I looked at the faces of my comrades on this adventure and wondered just how awful I must look. Scruffy stubble on chins, bags under eyes, general slumped postures -- Bonnaroo was giving us a good beating. But we managed to throw on our smiles, crank up a cadence, and got to the Brooer’s festival one more time. The crowd again applauded on our entrance, but I noticed that there was just a little more sedation amongst them than had been previously. The festival was taking a toll on everyone. More and more people were crashing out in obscure places, just trying to get enough energy for the final day of the party. After Bonnaroompah, it was off to the Solar Stage. The turn over and set up was quick, the feedback was bad, and the dust coming off of the foot paths was hanging in the air like a science fiction fog.
The show was trouble laden, but still fun. There were friendly Knoxville faces in the small gathering in front of the stage. People still smiling and having a little fun with us. Then we struck the last chord, got our last bit of applause for the weekend, and an hour later we finally had our gear back at camp. The plan was a shower, then dinner, then party. The reality was dinner, a beer, and oh jeez, I can’t think about moving. So I missed much of the Sunday at Bonnaroo activities, including the big closer with Widespread Panic. I did manage to make one final push through the park as Bonnaroo was in its last throws. I could hear the crowd roar from the main stage as Panic wailed into the evening. Vendors were starting to pack up wares and stage hands were already starting to tear down the equipment on all the tent stages. I decided to walk into the Cinema Tent to maybe just get off my feet for a minute and watch whatever may be showing on the screen. What I walked into reminded me of a triage scene from M*A*S*H. People were sprawled amongst the dark corners of the tent. People laid out in the chairs, some sleeping, some just in a daze, some quietly conversing. I sat down in a chair for a moment. Monterrey Pop Festival was playing on the screen and Simon & Garfunkle were singing Homeward Bound or something. It was the most surreal moment I had all week. I left soon afterwards; it kinda stank in there. The rest of the evening was just hanging out with friends around a cooler. No big party, no last hurrah. Just a chance to relax a bit.
Tomorrow we would get up and hustle to get all our tents down, trash thrown away, and gear in the cars. But for the Sunday at Bonnaroo evening, I was just going to sit and ponder the wonder of it all. How much fun I had had: the shows, the Bonnaroompah parades, naked man and the rest of the wild party people... And I thought about how much my own shower and bed would feel like heaven.
And it did. So closes Sunday at Bonnaroo and the adventures of Nate Barrett and his fellow Bonnaroompah band mates.
The details...well, they weren't so torrid after all. But I hope you've enjoyed reading through them, and if you have your own stories to tell about Bonnaroo or other Knoxville music adventures, please share them with us!
