When Phil calls, my ears pick up. It usually means a gig, and usually a fun one at that. I think that most musical folks in town like getting a call from Phil. “Hey, man, can you cover some dates in the middle of June?” Phil said. “Depends,” I said. “What you got?” “Oh, I could use a little help with a project on the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th.” “That sounds a lot like Bonnaroo.” “No, it sounds exactly like Bonnaroo.” And there you have it. Mr. Phil Pollard had just been contacted by A. C. Entertainment to round up a special group to perform at the Broo-er’s Festival, the micro-brew beer garden that lies in the middle of what is known as Centeroo. A.C. needed a band, a special band, a polka band. Of course, Phil had a polka band, why wouldn’t he? Just because they have never played before, don’t mean he didn’t have one. And the calls went out and the Bonnaroompah Band was born. At its core was key man extrodinaire, Geol Greenlee, on accordian. The Bearded’s lead mandolin player Kyle Campbell was on borrowed tuba; the ever cheery and wonderful Rachael Schlafer-Parton -- a person whom I am convinced could solo on a wet sock and bring a crowd to tears -- on piccalo; the aforementioned wacky Band of Humans leader, Phil Pollard, on marching snare; leaving me, a local bongo beater and bell banger, to hold it down on the big bass drum. Several rehearsals later, a quick promo spot on WDVX, and before you knew it, we got a couple of cars packed to the gills and are taking off to the Emerald City that is Manchester, Tennessee. ...more to come very soon on Nate Barrett's Bonnaroompah adventures at Bonnaroo 2007!
