Art Market Gallery
The Art Market Gallery is located on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, between the Mast General Store and the Downtown Grill and Brewery. The gallery has more than 60 area artists, all of whom are part owners of the gallery. Everyone does their share of the work in the gallery, including taking turns as leading President of the Gallery. Artists' areas of specialties include: painters, glass artists, printmakers, woodworkers, potters, fabric artists, jewelers, weavers, sculptors and photographers.
The Art Market Gallery was established for the 1982 World's Fair, and remained by the World's Fair Park in the Candy Factory Building until it was recently closed for use by Knoxville non-profits. The Gallery chose to relocate to Gay Street in support of - and to take strategic advantage of - the renaissance that has been occurring in downtown Knoxville. When I stopped by the Gallery, I spoke with Vivian Shoemaker, who has been making stained glass art since the 1980s, and who joined the Gallery as a full-time member upon her retirement.
Ms. Shoemaker said I should mention that the Gallery has a reception for every First Friday in downtown, including free food and wine. Also, Knoxville art scene fans should be on the lookout for the Gallery's upcoming 25th anniversary celebration. They're still planning what form the celebration will take. When you're ready for a nice piece of art for your home or office, stop by the Gallery, open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
